Introducing the Piano Tuner

Bill Golden lives in the Columbus, Ohio area (Westerville) and has been a piano tuner for more than 30 years.  He has tuned pianos in Columbus and Central Ohio since 1981.  Bill is an associate member of the Piano Technicians Guild, Columbus chapter, and was first schooled in the art of piano tuning in 1979 by his piano tuner uncle, Nolen B. Golden.  Uncle Nolen was a lifelong musician, composer, and piano tuner who lived in Dayton, Ohio.  Ron Golden learned the trade from his Dad and continues a piano tuning practice in the Dayton, Ohio area.

Bill comes from a large family of piano tuners, musicians, composers, and singers from southwestern Ohio.  Many of his relatives play such instruments as piano, organ, harmonica, accordion, and guitar.  Others excelled as singers, both in groups and as soloists.  Bill has a cousin who was an opera performer in West Germany and South Africa for quite awhile.  His Uncle Nolen led the World War II Army Chapeliers, a singing group who performed throughout Europe and who also sang at General Patton's funeral.

"What do you get when you drop a piano down a mine shaft?"

    "A flat minor!"

Bill tunes pianos "by ear" instead of depending on a tuning device, a tool which can mislead a piano tuner if not properly interpreted or kept properly calibrated.  While either an "aural" or a "device" piano tuning method can produce a well-tuned piano, Bill believes that tuning a piano "by ear" achieves the ideal and most natural tuned sound for your piano.

Bill has tuned pianos for The Ohio State University and Ohio Dominican University, both located in Columbus, Ohio.  He has also tuned pianos for national US band, Dashboard Confessional, and the British band, Keane.  If you are ready for a piano tune-up, request your tuning now.  Or, learn more about the benefits of having your piano tuned and also Bill's piano tuning process.

    Posted on 03/11/2010 05:20 PM
This is the last of my articles about my 1980's 7" singles. I really have grouped them in an ad hoc manner - this last lot is 'Singles N to Z' and I didn't even buy any by groups or artists beginning with Y or Z. Still, no matter. What we have here is really Singles N to X! Including XTC, The Stranglers and Feargal Sharkey.

  • What Makes DVD Guitar Lessons So Good?
    Posted on 03/11/2010 05:09 PM
I love learning the guitar by using DVD guitar lessons, why? Well for me it is the ability to watch intricate finger movements up close with a crystal clear screen. I can watch the instructor play a riff and then I have the ability to rewind the DVD and watch it again and again - in fact I can watch the same scene over and over again as many times as I need to be able to take it in and repeat what I am seeing.
